The Government of Japan Provides Grant Assistance for The Project for Livelihoods Improvement for Tomorrow (LIFT Project) -the development of vocational skills to build self-reliance and to prepare for repatriation
9 October, 2013 The government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Scheme (GGP), is providing funds amounting to 3,453,000baht for The Project for Livelihoods Improvement for Tomorrow (LIFT Project), to support vocational training of refugees to build self-reliance and prepare for repatriation. On 9 October, 2013, H.E. Mr. Shigekazu SATO, Ambassador of Japan and Mr. Juventino Mendoza, Program Director of the Catholic Office for Emergency Relief and Refugees (COERR), jointly signed the funding contract for the project at the Embassy of Japan. Currently, some 150,000 refugees live in nine camps along the Thai-Myanmar border. They include elderly evacuees who have stayed in the camp since the 1980s, refugees who suffer residual disability after war or accidents, as well as single parents with small children and elderly people who need care–classified as “Extremely Vulnerable Individuals (EVIs)” and numbering more than 10,000 in total. However, aid from International Organizations or NGOs is decreasing because of the favorable developments in Myanmar –at the same time, the lives of EVIs continue to be fraught with difficulties. Looking toward their future after resettlement, the development of vocational skills will be the key factor in preserving their dignity and ability to support themselves. The Government of Japan recognizes the project will contribute to building self-reliance in preparation for repatriation, as well as to establishment the bases for a stable daily life. The COERR, which is implementing the project, was established in 1978 to conduct activities for humanitarian support, working mainly works in the Refugee Camps. It is the only Thai NGO approved by the Thai government which is active in all nine 9 camps. We intend to continue supporting projects which contribute to achieving Human Security through the Grant Assistance for Human Security Projects scheme (GGP).
